Praia de Benagil

Home to Portugal's most famous sea cave with its iconic natural skylight. The small beach is the starting point for kayak tours to the famous Benagil Cave.
Praia de Benagil is home to Portugal's most famous sea cave—the Algar de Benagil—with its iconic natural skylight that has become one of the most photographed locations in the country. The cave features two entrances from the sea and a circular opening in the ceiling through which sunlight streams onto the small beach inside, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.
The small beach outside the cave serves as the primary departure point for kayak tours to explore this natural wonder. Once a quiet fishing village beach, Benagil has transformed into a must-visit destination, though the beach itself remains relatively simple with limited facilities.
Important note for 2024/2025: New regulations now prohibit swimming into the cave, and boats/kayaks cannot land on the beach inside. Visitors can only enter the cave on guided kayak tours (maximum 8 minutes inside) or boat tours (maximum 2 minutes). Each guide may take a maximum of six kayaks, so booking in advance is essential, especially in summer.
