Meia Praia

Location: undefined, western Algarve

Lagos's longest beach stretching 4km east of the marina. Occasional surf when south swells hit, and full facilities including restaurants and water sports rentals.

Meia Praia is the largest beach in the Lagos region, a 4km continuous expanse of golden sand that wraps around one of the biggest bays in Europe. The name literally translates to 'half beach,' though there's nothing halfway about this impressive stretch of coastline extending from Lagos Marina on the western side to the Odiáxere River mouth on the eastern side. The rock formations of Ponta da Piedade protect Meia Praia from waves coming from the southwest, which is why the sea here is relatively calm with no rocks in the water—perfect for swimming. The sand is soft and pleasant for barefoot walking, and the beach is wheelchair accessible. A recent addition (2023), the Meia Praia boardwalk stretches 3.4km, allowing visitors to stroll, run, or bike along the coast. Unlike the cliff-backed beaches of Lagos, Meia Praia is backed by dunes, which can make it windy on some days. The western end near the marina has the most facilities and liveliest atmosphere, while the eastern end offers a quieter, more natural experience.
