Praia da Balanca
Location: undefined, western Algarve
A pristine crescent of sand surrounded by towering ochre cliffs near Ponta da Piedade. The challenging access keeps crowds away.
Praia da Balança lies just within the shelter of the rocky Ponta da Piedade headland, a pristine crescent of sand shaped like a seashell and surrounded by towering ochre cliffs. The beach acquired its name ('Balança' means 'scales') from a nearby islet that resembles a balance scale, though it's also known locally as Praia Grande.
This beach remains relatively undiscovered compared to the more popular spots near Lagos, making it a peaceful retreat for those willing to make the effort to reach it. The sandstone rocks along the coast have been molded by centuries of erosion into a variety of shapes including arches, sinkholes, pinnacles, caves, and grottos—a photographer's paradise.
With no amenities whatsoever, Praia da Balança maintains a unity with nature that keeps it unspoiled by civilization. The trail down through a rift in the cliffs is part of the adventure, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Many kayak and boat tours operating from Lagos include a stop here, allowing visitors to see this hidden gem from the water.
