Praia da Cordoama

Location: undefined, western Algarve

Over a kilometer of practically deserted sand stretching beneath high black cliffs - the antidote to crowded Algarve beaches. This west-facing surf spot in the Costa Vicentina Natural Park is super consistent, catching even the smallest Atlantic pulses. Multiple peaks spread the crowd, and parking is always available even on peak summer weekends. Connects to Castelejo at low tide.

Praia da Cordoama is arguably one of the most gorgeous stretches of coast in Portugal, set within the dramatic Costa Vicentina Natural Park. Stretching for over a kilometer beneath high sand-colored cliffs, this vast beach is characterized by particular rock formations that emerge from both the water and the sand, creating a landscape unlike anywhere else in the Algarve. In terms of surf, Cordoama is super consistent thanks to its west-facing orientation, which picks up even the smallest Atlantic pulses. There's usually something breaking here when other spots are flat. The beach offers multiple peaks, with the main surf action happening in front of the car park where two or three sandbank peaks typically form. Depending on tide and swell direction, you'll find anything from mellow shoulders perfect for longboarding to punchier wedges for shortboarders. The multiple peaks serve another crucial purpose: spreading the crowd. While Amado and Arrifana fill up with surf schools and tourists, Cordoama's length means there's always space to find your own wave. Even better, parking is always available - even on peak summer weekends - something almost unheard of at popular Algarve beaches. In summer, Cordoama transforms into a playground for surf schools and beginners, with soft whitewater and small peaks. Autumn brings the most balanced mix of size and shape, perfect for intermediate surfers. The beach performs best on a pushing mid to high tide; low tide can be dumpy and fast. At low tide, you can walk along the rocks to neighboring Castelejo, passing the distinctive Pedra da Laje rock formation.
