Praia da Luz

Location: undefined, western Algarve

A popular beach with the distinctive Rocha Negra (Black Rock) formation. Walk past the black rock to find hidden coves at low tide with excellent rock pools for snorkeling.

Praia da Luz is one of the western Algarve's most cherished beach destinations, a place that has embraced tourism while carefully preserving the relaxed charm of its fishing village origins. Rising dramatically from the eastern edge of the beach stands one of the region's most distinctive geological wonders: the towering Rocha Negra (Black Rock). This massive black rock formation was created around 70-150 million years ago from cooled lava from ancient volcanoes near Monchique. The Rocha Negra is of magmatic origin, with a composition similar to basalts, and shows typical geological features found in volcanic vents—making it a fascinating natural monument. Located on a sandy bay sheltered from the Atlantic by the Rocha Negra headland, the beach has calm, clean, shallow waters perfect for families with small children. The Blue Flag beach has soft golden sand and is equipped with lifeguards during summer. At low tide, walk past the black rock to discover hidden coves with excellent rock pools for snorkeling and marine life exploration.
