Praia do Beliche

Location: undefined, western Algarve

Home to the only proper wedge wave in the Algarve. This dramatic beach sits at the 'end of the world' between Sagres and Cape St. Vincent, where 40-meter limestone cliffs shelter a golden sand cove that produces powerful, hollow waves breaking over shallow water. Access requires descending approximately 100 steep steps - and the waves demand equal commitment.

Praia do Beliche is where the Algarve shows its teeth. Nestled between Sagres and Cape St. Vincent - literally at the 'end of the world' - this stunning beach is framed by 40-meter limestone cliffs that plunge dramatically into the Atlantic. The sheltered cove produces what many consider the classiest wave in the entire region: the only proper wedge in the Algarve. When conditions align, Beliche delivers powerful, hollow waves that suck off a shallow shelf of sand to create super-fun barrel sections. The main peak is a hollow, powerful left that should only be attempted by advanced surfers and bodyboarders. Even on smaller days, the waves break on shallow water and can easily result in damage to boards - or worse. The spectacular cliffs that make Beliche so photogenic also provide crucial shelter from wind. When other Sagres beaches are blown out by the dominant north and northeast winds, Beliche often remains clean and surfable. Best conditions occur at mid to high tide with west or northwest swells and offshore north/northeast winds. February typically delivers the most consistent quality waves. Reaching the sand requires descending approximately 100 steep stone steps - a significant commitment that filters out casual beachgoers and helps maintain Beliche's mellow, uncrowded atmosphere. A seasonal restaurant operates at beach level in summer, and the historic Fortaleza do Beliche (Beliche Fort) sits on the cliff above, adding to the dramatic setting.
