Praia do Canavial
Location: undefined, western Algarve
Where locals go to escape everything. This wild beach sits below steep cliffs with no facilities, no lifeguard, and often no other people. Small caves to explore at low tide.
Praia do Canavial is where locals go to escape everything. This wild, relatively untouched beach sits below steep cliffs in a rocky bay, offering complete solitude even in peak summer—it's arguably the least visited beach in Lagos. The name 'Canavial,' meaning 'cane field,' refers to the reed vegetation visitors encounter on the descent.
Unlike the dramatic rock arches and stacks found at nearby Ponta da Piedade, Canavial presents a different kind of beauty: tall yellow cliffs rising above fine golden sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. It's a longer beach compared to the tiny coves over the headland, catching a fair bit of Atlantic surf similar to neighboring Porto de Mós.
The relative isolation has made it the first beach in the area to be frequented by naturists, and it remains an unofficial nude beach where clothing is optional. The eastern end tends to attract more naturists. There are no facilities whatsoever—no restaurants, no lifeguards, no shade—so this is a beach for those who want raw, unspoiled nature and don't mind being self-sufficient.
